In the summer of 2001, Burpee Museum led an expedition to the Hell Creek Formation of southeastern Montana to search for dinosaur fossils. The expedition team, led by Michael Henderson, Burpee's Curator of Earth Sciences, was made up of amateur rock hounds, most of whom had never been to Montana before. The day before the expedition was due to pack up and head for home, two of the amateur team members, Carol Tuck and Bill Harrison, discovered pieces of fossilized bone weathering out from the side of a butte.

By May of 2002 an excavation permit had been obtained. Over the next six weeks, a total of 40 eager Burpee staff members and volunteers would travel to Hell Creek to set about uncovering, mapping, and identifying the bones that had been found.

Headed up by Scott Williams, Burpee's Collections Manager, a team of fossil preparators began chipping away at the rocks that contained Jane's bones. It would end up taking 15 preparators more than 18 months and 10,000 man-hours to complete the work.
